14th Chapter
The Path of Bhakti
Prose: In the 14th chapter,
the Lord will speak on the path of bhakti. Uddhava asked, “O Lord of All
Opulence! Various people prescribe various means (sadhana). You
prescribe only pure devotion (bhakti). Please reveal to me which is
the best among these.” The Lord replied, “When the Veda was lost in the
previous dissolution (pralaya), I [retrieved it and] imparted it to
Brahma first. Brahma also spoke it to Manu and the sons. They also transmitted
it to their sons; only then did the devas and the daityas come
to know the Veda. Everybody interpreted the Veda according to their own nature
(svabhava) and began to engage in various means in order to fulfill
their many desires. Seeing them, the other people also began to emulate. But,
know that all of these means have extremely limited fruit. Listen to the
chief fruit of bhakti. The other people cannot even hope to obtain the
happiness that comes to the desireless (nirapeksa) devotee. As, for this
devotee, all the ten directions overflow with happiness. Therefore, apart
from me—my service—the single-minded devotee does not wish for even salvation
and the abode of Brahma. I also love that one better than my own body. So
much so that I even tag along behind him and follow him wherever he goes. The
happiness that he obtains—that is unknowable by any other person. What to
speak of the best devotees; even the ones addicted to sense-objects (visayi)
secure accomplishment through my devotion. Therefore know that I am subordinated
only through pure, desireless devotion. (Verses 1-20)
Even yoga, etc. is unable to do so. And since my bhakti purifies even the outcast not doing any prescribed actions, there is no means apart from bhakti for purification of heart. Now, how can bhakti be known without love (prema)? How can the heart be purified without bhakti? Therefore, know that it is the one endowed with love-filled devotion (prema bhakti) that sanctifies the entire world. Just as fire removes the dirt of gold, so also know that only love-filled devotion clears the dirt of the mind. The other means cannot do so in that manner. [As regards knowledge,] when devotion comes about, knowledge also comes automatically. Then, one’s heart remains attached to me, always. Therefore, forsaking all the other means—including the paths of karma and jnana—you do only devotion to me.” [...] (Verses 21-30) |
